Memorial for the dead trees

Moist paths, silent trees
And low sky;
The voices of silence are loud in Verzasca.
A vast sea of memories, some warm us up, some tear us apart.
How are the memories of the forest of Verzasca remembered?
The silence of the forest is broken by a loud familiar sound,
A constant sound, periodically breaking the silence
periodic, periodic, periodic, periodic
The familiar sound has echoed in the depths of the valley since thousands of years,
Over and over and over again.
A tree falls on the ground, leaving a tree shaped emptiness,
Does the tree shaped emptiness cast shadows?
As darkness engulfs the valley, million of tree shaped emptiness silently take shape of a memorial.
A memorial, a reminder of what existed, what was.

The work is imagining a memorial for the trees which fell in the forests of Verzasca over thousands of years. I am trying to offer a eulogy in their memory.
Umidi sentieri, alberi silenziosi
E cielo basso;
In Verzasca, le voci del silenzio sono rumorose.
Un vasto mare di ricordi, alcuni ci scaldano, altri ci fanno a pezzi.
Come vengono ricordate le memorie della foresta della Verzasca?
Il silenzio della foresta è rotto da un forte suono familiare,
Un suono costante, che periodicamente rompe il silenzio
periodico, periodico, periodico, periodico
Questo suono familiare risuona nelle profondità della valle da migliaia di anni,
Ancora e ancora e ancora.
Un albero cade a terra, lasciando un vuoto a forma di albero,
Il vuoto a forma d’albero getta ombra?
Mentre l’oscurità inghiottisce la valle, milioni di vuoti a forma d’albero si trasformano silenziosamente in un memoriale.
Un memoriale, un ricordo di quanto esistito, di ciò che è stato.

L’opera immagina un memoriale per gli alberi caduti nelle foreste della Valle Verzasca nel corso di migliaia di anni. Io sto cercando di recitare un elogio in loro ricordo.

Farside Collective is a project space & micro-publishers pivoted around photography based between Leh, North Indian Himalayas & Bretagne, France.
Debasish Borah (b.1987) is a visual artist and photographer from Assam, India currently based in Rennes, France. He works with photography and independent publishing focussing on relationships between natural landscapes and geo-politics. He’s trying to understand the negotiations between indigenous societies and concepts of decolonisation, citizenship, governance and propaganda. He’s the co-founder of art-space and small batch publishers- Farside Collective. He also co-founded Art Book Depot, India’s first independently organised art book festival.
